Are you and your family part of a playgroup? Playgroups provide an opportunity
for mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers to meet regularly with their
babies, toddlers and preschool children to play and socialise.
Children learn by seeing, listening, feeling, touching, tasting, mimicking and
watching other children. Playgroups provide all these experiences. Children
benefit by learning to play with other children, experiencing different toys and
relating to other adults, which also aids in child's brain development.
Council employs two part-time Playgroup Coordinators. Their main role is to
facilitate supported playgroups based on locally identified needs, currently
• New Residents' Playgroup -- for new residents to Ballarat; and
• Young Parents' Playgroup -- for young parents.
New playgroups are regularly added to this program and feedback about local
needs is welcome.
They also provide information on community playgroups in Ballarat, assist in
setting up new groups and run regular promotional events. These include
Ballarat's Biggest Playgroup and Come and Play Days.

Breastfeeding charter update
The Ballarat Library has received positive feedback about its support of
Council's Breastfeeding Charter. The library has had a 'Breastfeeding Welcome
Here' sticker on its front door for several months.
The Breastfeeding Charter was launched in August 2008 as part of the
Ballarat Best Start Project. There are now 36 signatories and they include
health providers, cafes and retail outlets.
The number of participants in the library's Tiny Tots Story sessions has been
steadily increasing. The library's Lesley Morgan said staff have received many
comments about how the facilities are child and family friendly. She believes
supporting breastfeeding has made the library more inviting for young families.
For further information about the Breastfeeding Charter contact Council's
Promoting Breastfeeding Facilitator Lisa Thorneycroft on 5320 5676, email
