Ballarat residents have been invited to have their say on a range of issues
during the past couple of months. A series of Council grants have also been
available. For further information please read the summaries listed below:
PROPOSED ROAD DISCONTINUANCE
(SCHEDULE 10, LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 1989)
PORTION OF HICKMAN STREET, GOLDEN POINT
In early July Council notified residents it was considering a proposal to
discontinue a portion of Hickman Street, Golden Point. The affected area
runs approximately 100 metres from Grant Street. Written submissions
closed on Monday 3 August. Council will consider the matter at an
upcoming fortnightly meeting.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Not-for-profit community groups were invited to participate in the first round
of Council's Community Development Grant Program. The funding is
available for projects that support or provide services to enhance the quality
of life for Ballarat residents. Up to $80,000 will be distributed this round
and $20,000 will be available during the second round which opens in
February 2010. The successful applicants will be notified in September.

POSITIVE AGEING SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM
Community groups and organisations were invited to apply for funding
through Council's Positive Ageing Small Grants Program. Up to $500 was
available to help support events during the Ballarat Seniors Festival. This
festival will run throughout the month of October.

COMMUNITY EVENT GRANT SCHEME
Council has introduced a Community Event Grant Scheme to help not-for-
profit and/or incorporated bodies organise quality events. The Grants
Scheme focuses on building local community identity, pride and expertise
by encouraging community events that are considered important for the
Ballarat community. Funding will be available in two rounds. Round one
closed on Monday 31 August. Round two will open on Monday 2 November.
The successful applicants for Round one will be announced in October.

SPORT AND RECREATION VICTORIA
COMMUNITY FACILITY FUNDING PROGRAM 2010/2011
Council advised local sport and recreation organisations that the State
Government Department of Planning and Community Development
(incorporating Sport and Recreation Victoria) released its 2010/2011
Community Facility Funding Program -- Minor Facilities.
Organisations were able to apply for up to $60,000. Applications needed to
be submitted via Council by Monday 3 August 2009.

BALLARAT COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Expressions of Interest were invited from members of the community who
were interested in being a community representative on the Ballarat
Community Safety Advisory Committee.
The Advisory Committee was seeking two community members with a
specific interest or background which reflects one or more of the priority
areas identified in the Community Safety Action Plan. The priority areas are:
Partnerships, Community Strengthening, Urban Design for Safe and Healthy
Environments, Safer Roads, Access and Movement, Alcohol Related Harm
and Family Violence Prevention.
Applications closed on Friday 7 August. Submissions are currently being
reviewed by a sub-committee comprising members of the Community
Safety Advisory Committee and applicants will be selected based on their
involvement and/or interest in the priority areas of the Community Safety

NEW RESIDENTS FUNCTION
Council invited new residents to a free function on Monday 3 August at 6pm
in the Trench Room, Town Hall, Sturt Street, Ballarat. Those in attendance
received an official welcome from the Mayor and Councillors, learnt about
their new city and met other new residents.
