Lake Wendouree, performers back stage at Her Majesty's Theatre,
Sovereign Hill volunteers and Olympic marathon runner Steve Moneghetti
are some of the people and places that feature in the MAPping Ballarat
photography exhibition, which is part of the Foto Biennale's Core Program.
The photos of Ballarat were taken in March by 26 of Australia's best
photographers. MAP Group photographers have won many accolades,
including multiple World and National Press Awards, with some of the
photos exhibited in Australia's top galleries.
The group took thousands of photos as part of the community
documentary project. Fifty photos have been framed and are being hung
in the exhibition in the A Hall at the Ballarat Town Hall. The photographers
had such a challenging time selecting the best photos that additional
images of Ballarat will be shown on a big screen during the exhibition
from Saturday 5 September to Sunday 4 October.

Lovers of photography will find there is plenty on offer in Ballarat this month.
The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is being held from Friday 4
September until Sunday 4 October. The program features 150 events and
60 venues in Ballarat and neighbouring towns.
There are 20 exhibitions in the Core Program. These photographers were
invited to participate in the Foto Biennale by the organising committee. Nine
of the photographers are from overseas.
More than 60 fringe exhibitions will also be held during the month-long event.
Entry to this portion of the Biennale was open to anyone. The participating
photographers have had to source a venue to host their show, these range
from cafes to a boutique hotel and a former butcher's shop.
An educational program has also been organised which includes a series of
portfolio reviews, talks, workshops and seminars.
A number of special events are scheduled including the judging of the
Victorian Photography Student of the Year on Sunday 4 October. Kodak and
the ANZ are coordinating the Capture Ballarat Challenge, while a
photography market will take place on Sunday 13 September.
Work is underway to lift the Foto Biennale's international profile. Premier
photography events from across the world are included in the Festival of Light
and the Ballarat event has applied for membership. As part of the application
process the Festival Director of a similar event in Buenos Ares, Elda Harrington
will travel to Ballarat to take a first hand look at the Foto Biennale.
