With another hot and dry summer on the way there's little doubt that we face
another dangerous fire season. Council is working closely with the Country Fire
Authority to ensure that our municipality and residents are as prepared as

changed and in coming weeks you will receive a great deal of infor mation about
how to prepare your property to minimise the risk of fire, and what to do should
fire threaten your property.
At the heart of the information will be the CFA's 'Prepare. Act. Survive.
campaign and I urge all residents to take careful note of the CFA's advice.
The suburbs of Mt Helen and Mt Clear have been identified as high bushfire risk
areas and Township Protection Plans are bei ng developed for both areas.
Residents should be pro-active and take advantage of the 10/30 rule, a recent
change to regulations which allows native vegetation to be cleared around
houses in the lead up to the fire season, without a planning permit:
Apart from reducing fuel around their homes residents can do a number of
other things to prepare for the fire season. These include attending CFA-run
Commu nity Fire Ready Information Sessions or Bushfire Safety Sessions, or
joining with neighbours to form new Community Fireguard groups.
For its part, Council is carrying out property inspections and will issue fire
prevention notices to owners of properties considered hazardous. If a
landowner fails to comply with the notice Council will carry out the specified
works and the costs charged to the property owner.
I encourage all owners of vacant land or rental properties to check them for
potential fire hazards including long grass, weeds or undergrowth.
Council is making sure the municipality's roadsides and reserves don't pose a
fire risk this summer and will be working to significantly reduce fuel loads on
more than 800 kilometres of roadsides and in a number of public open
