Draft CBD strategy update
Last month Council released its draft CBD strategy for public comment.
The strategy sets out detailed plans and actions for the next 20 - 25 years
to encourage and direct growth in central Ballarat and to enhance the
city's best assets.
The strategy aims to build on the CBD's strengths and to provide direction
that will guide the inevitable growth and changes the city will face into the
It identifies actions designed to enhance the CBD in the short term as
well as more ambitious plans for the future which will require substantial
planning and funding.
Council has allocated $8 million over three years to implement the initial
stages of project.
An extensive consultation process took place throughout November with
around 400 people attending informal information sessions at Children's
Day, SpringFest, various locations around the CBD as well as two

more lively and vibrant CBD.

development, changes to traffic arrangements, and streetscape
An increase in open spaces, such as a plaza adjacent to the Town Hall
and an innovative 'wetlands' park in Grenville Street exposing the
Yarrowee River channel, are some of the features put forward in the
Mair Street, (between Dawson and Humffray streets) has been identified
as an area for new development as it is an area where heritage controls
do not apply.
The areas flanking the Bridge Mall to the north and south are also seen
as potential new development sites to meet future demand for
department stores and supermarkets.
More street cafes, residential accommodation in converted heritage
buildings, trees and verandas to provide weather protection, footpath
extensions and median strips to make crossing wide roads easier, and small
street markets are all promoted as ways to achieve a more vibrant CBD.
