Prince of Wales Park
The Prince of Wales Park Masterplan was adopted by Council late last year.
Prince of Wales Park is a significant reserve in the western area of
Ballarat and is one of the city's major sports precincts. The Prince of
Wales Park Masterplan outlines a number of recommendations for the
planned development of the site over a 10 year period. The Park will be
upgraded from a district reserve to a regional sports facility, due to the
wide range of activities held at the reserve.
The Masterplan has outlined a process to redevelop the site so that it
can balance the needs of both active and passive users and provides
direction to ensure the character and functionality of the reserve is
visibly enhanced. The plan continues to provide sporting facilities at a
regional level whilst providing quality open space opportunities for the
The plan features some major changes to the park:
• Creation of pathways - pedestrian linkages throughout and to the park
• Provision for further growth of the Ballarat Aquatic Centre
• Improvement of baseball /softball facilities
• Inclusion of tennis facilities
• Relocation of archery facilities
• Improved parking areas and traffic control
The final Masterplan is a critical step in ensuring the park has the
capacity to cater for Ballarat's growing population. Prince of Wales Park
is the first in a series of sports precinct upgrades proposed to cater for
the region's projected population growth.
The upgrades planned for in the Masterplan will be progressively
implemented over the next 10 years as funding becomes available.
More than 30 Buninyong residents took the opportunity to meet City of
Ballarat Councillors and senior Council staff during a free community
barbeque held at the Buninyong Botanic Gardens recently.
Similar to the Community Conversation sessions that were held last year, the
barbeque was an opportunity for residents to come along and raise issues
that concern them in an informal setting. A broad cross section of the
community was represented at the event.
Some of the topics raised by residents included the benefits of De Soza Park,
the positive impact of the Australian Open Road Cycling Championships, the
potential impact of the Western Link Road and the need for more dog friendly
The feedback given at the community barbeque will be taken into
consideration when Council reviews the 2009 -- 2013 Council Plan between
now and June.
