Ballarat Begonia Weekend
Ballarat will again be in full bloom for the 58th Begonia Weekend being held
from 6 -- 8 March.
This year the event returns to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, and for the first
time since 2004, the Begonia Parade will travel along Wendouree Parade.
With the theme of 'The Secret Garden', there will be a kaleidoscope of vivid
blooms and a program of activities and entertainment for garden lovers and
A must see for garden lovers and anyone with even a passing interest in
beautiful flowers is the weekend centrepiece - the outstanding Begonia
Display. Visitors to the display will marvel at the famous begonias, which will
be in full bloom in a hue of colours, made all the more impressive by its
location in the beautiful Conservatory.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the gardens to discover
hidden delights. With garden and nursery tours, free music, and of course
the ever-popular begonia display, there will be something for everyone to
enjoy. The kids will be entertained with a wonderful variety of activities
including garden arts and crafts, garden painting, woodwork activities, face
painting and an animal farm.
Children and parents alike will love the MadHatter Tea Parties. An energetic
mix of songs, games and stories. Children are encouraged to make a wild
and wacky hat and bring it to the Tea Parties for the chance to win prizes on
the day. Enjoy a fresh cup of make-believe tea, pretend cakes and other
wonders. Saturday and Sunday, 11am.
Creating a wonderful atmosphere, a variety of roving entertainers, performers
and musicians will provide continuous music and performances throughout
weekend. You can also enjoy a free heritage tram ride along Wendouree
parade, courtesy of the Ballarat Tramway Museum.
A must see this Begonia Weekend are the Zimboyz. The African troupe will
perform balancing, fire skipping rope, hoop diving, dance and the best
tumbling you will ever see. The production is full of acrobatics, daring stunts
and dance. Saturday and Sunday 11.45am, 1.30pm and 3.05pm. Monday
10.50am, 12.20pm and 2.20pm.
As a colourful conclusion to the long weekend's activities this year's Begonia
Parade will be held on Monday 8 March from 3 -- 4.30pm. The Parade will
travel along Wendouree Parade, starting from Hamilton Avenue and finishing
at the North Gardens. There will be many great vantage points for spectators
to witness what will be a fabulous display of local talent.
Other activities for locals and visitors to enjoy over the long weekend include
the Apex Art Show, Australia's largest outdoor open-air art exhibition, and the
Ballarat Antique Fair.

TWILIGHT SCREENING OF THE NEW
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Bring along your picnic rug or low foldout chair and experience the new
Alice in Wonderland on Lake Wendouree's foreshore. Alice in Wonderland
under the stars, the perfect way to start your Ballarat Begonia Weekend.
When: Friday 5 March, gates open from 7.30pm. Movie commencing
at dusk (approx 8.45pm)
