From the Mayor's desk
This Council is now 18 months into its term and is rapidly delivering on a
number of projects and strategies to position this city as a strong, growing
The Ballarat Aquatic Centre redevelopment is nearing completion, an
unprecedented capital works program is underway, we are making
improvements to the CBD and have delivered a number of innovative
stormwater harvesting projects, which are helping to refill the Lake and
will also provide a sustainable supply of ground water to service our parks,
gardens and sporting ovals.
Council is well on track to achieve these goals and objectives that were
outlined in the Council Plan and the recently adopted 2010/11 Budget. All of
these actions are underpinned by strategic documents such as the Ballarat
West Growth Area Plan, the CBD Strategy and the Economic Strategy.
It is important for Council that we remain in control of the growth our city
is experiencing, however to protect the lifestyle this city currently enjoys,
we need to have a strong economic base.
Council's role is to help investors understand the opportunities that are
available in Ballarat. And this is precisely the approach we will be taking
across all of the economic sectors identified in the Economic Strategy.
The announcement in June that Vertex Australia will set up operation in
Ballarat, creating 600 new jobs for the city; can be seen as the first real
world application of the Economic Strategy.
We understand that in order to maximise the potential opportunities for future
growth and investment in our city we must create the right environment. We
must be open for business, and we must have a "can do" attitude.
Finally, in a win, win for the city, Council endorsed the Ballarat Show Day
to be this year's November public holiday. The decision is the result of
extensive consultation with the community and industry and follows the
announcement by the Ballarat Turf Club that the Ballarat Cup would be
moved to a Sunday.
