Residents are invited to celebrate the new look Ballarat Aquatic Centre at
a family fun day on Sunday 10 October. The celebration will officially open
the redeveloped centre, which has been undergoing extensive upgrades
for the past year.
The $4.5 million redevelopment includes new aquatic facilities, amenity
areas, staff access spaces, improvement to aquatic infrastructure and an
extention to the café.
In May of this year, the new amenities area, including two new group change
areas, additional universal access toilet and change spaces and a new
staffroom facility, were opened to the public.
Work then moved onto the foyer and café area. The café and seating area
has been extended, with an upgraded kitchen installed. First impressions
have also improved with a more customer friendly layout in the foyer.
But most impressive is the upgraded aquatic infrastructure. Boasting two
new pools, steam room and spa, the facility is now one of the best in the
state with an indoor 25m heated pool, heated toddlers pool, heated learners
pool, spa and steam room, health and wellbeing centre, gymnastics centre
Behind the scenes is a new filtration system and boiler to heat all pools,
ensuring more consistent, reliable and energy efficient cleaning and heating
of the facilities.
While a part of the initial vision for the centre, the original project scope did
not have sufficient funds to cover the inclusion of the spa. However, earlier
this year, Council was able to make additional funds available to ensure its
inclusion. The spa facility includes full disability access which contributes
to the wider vision of a wellness zone as part of the redevelopment.
Ballarat Aquatic Centre Advisory Committee member Councillor Des Hudson
said Council was delighted to see the redevelopment nearing completion.
"The project will deliver an outstanding facility for Ballarat. The upgrade
ensures the Ballarat Aquatic Centre has the capacity to cater for the current
and projected needs of our community.
"Council would like to thank residents and regular users of the facility for their
patience during the upgrade and encourage everyone to come along to the
family day and celebrate this great community asset," Cr Hudson said.
The Aquatic Centre is open Monday to Friday 6am - 9pm, Saturday and
Sunday 8am - 6pm and public holidays 10am -- 6pm.
