Ballarat West -
The new suburbs in the Ballarat West Growth Area are starting to take
The Ballarat West Growth Area is one of the state's most significant and
ambitious planning projects, with eventual housing in new residential
neighbourhoods for approximately 40,000 residents and a major new
employment area that will encompass the Ballarat Aerodrome and a
Council is leading the planning for this exciting new area of Ballarat.
Recent financial support from the Federal Government has allowed
additional resources to be dedicated to the project, which has resulted
in Council finalising a number of technical reports earlier than expected.
These technical reports inform the structure and character of the new
communities so now more detailed planning and community consultation
can commence. Council will continue to consult with the community,
landholders, government agencies, non-government organisations and
other interested parties throughout the planning process.
There will be four sustainable communities in the Growth Area. The four
communities will offer a range of housing, enhanced job, business and
retail opportunities, high quality parkland and recreation spaces, public
and private education and community facilities to support the needs and
lifestyle aspirations of existing and future residents.
The preparation of a structure plan for the Alfredton West precinct, the
first of the four new communities within the Growth Area, is indicative of
the planning progress made. The plan promotes the development of a
sustainable and liveable community by providing:
approximately 4,000 houses for a projected population of 11,000
• people over the next 20 years;
retail and commercial areas to enhance local shopping, employment
and services for new and existing residents;
parkland and recreational areas;
public transportation; and
education and community facilities.
A draft version of the plan was discussed with members of the community
at public information sessions held by Council in September. Council
welcomed the significant community interest in the project which was
highlighted by the large attendance over the two days of the public
The Alfredton West Precinct Structure Plan will soon be placed on formal
public exhibition which will provide another opportunity for public comment
and input. Council encourages the community and relevant stakeholders
to provide feedback during the public exhibition period.
