Town Hall Plaza creates
Throughout October, local residents and school children assisted Council
further plan for the proposed Town Hall Plaza, to be located in Armstrong
Street South, between the Town Hall and Myer.
The proposed Town Hall Plaza was one of the key outcomes of Council's
CBD Strategy and once complete will provide an open community space
to be used for gatherings, markets and public celebrations. The Town Hall
Plaza will become the new heart of the CBD, Council is keen to plan and
develop it in conjunction with the community to ensure that it reflects
the community's needs.
Council placed draft plans for the space on public display throughout
October and asked residents and businesses, through a range of
consultations, to provide suggestions and feedback. Consultations included
an information workshop at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, surveys, online
feedback forms and conversations with pre-schoolers, school children
and young people. Grade three and four children from Dana St Primary
School were asked to draw what they would like to see in the space and
participants in Council's Children's Week activities were also given an
opportunity to provide feedback on the plans.
Council is currently in the process of analysing all of the feedback which
will inform the next stage of detailed design.
Updating the CBD Car Park
During consultation on the Town Hall Plaza Council also asked members
of the community for feedback on car parking in the CBD, particularly
where it is currently working well and where it isn't. This feedback will be
used in reviewing and updating Council's Car Park Strategy.
Having a long term plan to ensure adequate car parking is a major focus
of the CBD Strategy. Council recognises that the heart of the city cannot
succeed without adequate parking.
Council has appointed well-known firm AECOM, which has been involved
in previous transport planning projects in Ballarat to assist in bringing
the plan together.
Council has also established a Community Implementation Reference Group
consisting of residents, key stakeholders and government representatives
who meet regularly to manage the consultation and review all of the
feedback received throughout October.
It is expected the review of the strategy and findings from the consultation
will be available in the new year.
