Girrabanya outdoor play
A number of local children may have a new favourite play space with the
completion of the stimulating new playground area at the Girrabanya Centre
for Children and their Families.
Designed to stimulate children's senses and encourage imaginative and
active play, the architecturally designed space features natural and tactile
materials, interactive spaces and areas for both quiet and energetic play.
The outdoor playground is attached to the Centre's childcare and kindergarten
facilities and was designed by highly regarded landscape company Mary
Jeavons Landscape Architects, which specialises in the design of play
spaces in a world where children are increasingly sedentary, indoors and
The new play areas include sandpits, 'secret garden' paths, play and gym
equipment, different types of ground covers to stimulate the senses, gardens
The redesign of the outdoor play area was the final component of the
redevelopment of the former Girrabanya Children's Centre into a one stop
shop for families. The Girrabanya Centre for Children and their Families is
an early years health and wellbeing hub offering Maternal and Child Health
Services, interview and consulting rooms, services by local agencies as well
as childcare and kindergarten.
The City of Ballarat provided the facility with a grant to fully support the
project and playground redesign. Works were undertaken in two stages over
the winter months to allow ongoing access to the existing playground for
children of the centre and to limit disruption to services.
