ANZAC Day 2011
ANZAC Day is one of our nation's most significant commemorative occasions.
Since 1916 people across Australia have marked the anniversary of the first
major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces.
Today, ANZAC Day is a time when we reflect on the sacrifices of all Australians
who have fought and made the ultimate sacrifice in all the wars and
campaigns in which Australia has had a military presence.
The Ballarat Commemorative Days Committee will conduct a series of
services in Ballarat on Monday 25 April, including a Dawn Service at the
Ballarat Cenotaph, Church Service and the ANZAC Day Parade down Sturt
Street. The Parade will be followed by a Commemorative Service.
Services will also be held in Sebastopol and Buninyong.
The full program is as follows:
5.45am - Dawn Service, Ballarat Cenotaph, Sturt Street
8.30am -- Wreath laying ceremony, Arch of Victory, Sturt Street
9.00am -- Wreath laying ceremony, Ex POW Memorial, Lake Wendouree

Attracting major events
to the city
Formula 1 action hit the streets of Ballarat recently, with two cars from the
Minardi Formula 1 team providing a spectacle in Sturt Street.
An estimated crowd of more than 6000 people lined Sturt Street from 3pm
to witness what can only be described as a unique opportunity for the people
of Ballarat and beyond. The City of Ballarat worked closely with the Melbourne
Grand Prix Corporation to host the event in Ballarat at short notice.
The event further confirmed Ballarat as the capital city of western Victoria,
and underlined our ability to host major events, following on from a successful
Begonia Festival the weekend before, Harmony Fest the preceding Friday,
and the ongoing hosting of major cycling events such as the Australian
Open Road Cycling Championships.
Events like the Formula 1 display bring a range of benefits to Ballarat. They
provide an opportunity for our residents to participate in something that
metropolitan residents take for granted, while our retailers can capitalise
on the crowds that an event will draw. Most importantly, events on this
scale expose our city to key decision makers in metropolitan and national
audiences and can lead to other exciting economic development activities
for Ballarat and the surrounding region.
