World’s Best Cyclists Race
Ballarat is Australia’s greatest cycling destination with a growing calendar of
professional and recreational cycling events.
Host of several of the nation’s premier cycling races, Ballarat is also home
to a number of recreational cycling trails that locals and visitors enjoy whilst
exploring the city and surrounds.
Jayco Herald Sun Tour Back in Ballarat
The Jayco Herald Sun Tour returns to Ballarat next month and Australia’s oldest
stage race features an impressive line-up of the nation’s best cyclists.
Now in its 59th year and boasting 18 teams, the Tour runs from Wednesday
to Sunday, 12 to 16 October travelling through some of the most picturesque
and at times challenging rides of Victoria.
Ballarat residents will have front-row seats to all the action when the Tour
rides into town in the opening stage on Wednesday, 12 October.
Riders will navigate a rolling 165km from Whittlesea to Ballarat through the
stunning central highlands and goldfields regions, culminating in an afternoon
sprint finish at Lake Wendouree. Several support events will be staged at the
lake, 11.30am to 2.30pm, on Wednesday, 12 October including the Victorian
Schools Cycling Championships, Honda Women's Tour and amateur and
masters races. On Thursday, 13 October, riders set off on the second leg
from Ballarat to Geelong.
After an absence of a year to make way for the 2010 UCI Road World
Championships in Geelong, the traditional cycling festival of community
activities will once again fill the streets of Ballarat.
