2014 WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The announcement that the 2014 World Masters Rowing Championships
will be held in Ballarat came all the way from Slovenia last month, at the
final celebrations of the 2011 World Masters Rowing Championships.
Fiercely contested ever y year, Ballarat’s bid for the 2014 event had been
two years in the making, following the announcement in August last year
that Ballarat would fly the Australian flag as the nation’s nominee to attract
the popular event.
Selected over Trakai in Lithuania, Ballarat will be the first Victorian city and
only the second in Australia to host the event behind Adelaide in 1997.
The successful bid involved years of preparation and negotiation between
City of Ballarat, Ballarat Regional Tourism, Victorian Major Events Corporation
and Rowing Australia.
Masters sporting events are increasingly popular, as more people look
to continue their competitive participation in sports, such as rowing,
canoeing, cycling and swimming. The World Masters Rowing Championships
announcement closely followed the good news that Ballarat will host the 2012
State and National Masters Rowing Championships in May next year.
Ballarat has capped a busy and successful events month, hosting the
2011 Cycling Australia Masters Road National Championships and the
Jayco Herald Sun Tour.
