City of Ballarat
From the Mayor’s desk
It’s been a busy and exciting year in Ballarat. As more new residents
choose to call our city home and our population reaches 100,000, City
of Ballarat is planning for this growth while also taking care of Ballarat’s
In 2012, Council enters the final year of our four year term. It’s sure to be
another busy year of working hard to deliver infrastructure and ser vices to
the Ballarat community, and progress our city forward into the future.
Being Mayor in 2011 is an experience that blends what I loved about
this city when I was growing up here a few decades ago and the exciting,
prosperous Ballarat that we live in today.
The pleasure of chairing Council meetings at the iconic Town Hall that has
been a Ballarat landmark for more than 150 years was never lost on me.
And a personal highlight amongst the many formal presentations and events
was opening the bowling season at the Sebastopol Bowling Club, where as
a boy I watched my dad on the greens.
Ballarat was a great city when I was growing up – and it’s a great city today.
As Mayor, it’s with pride that I’ve represented our city when welcoming the
Australian Prime Minister and Governor General to Ballarat. As Australia’s
fastest growing inland regional city, Ballarat is increasingly important in the
national landscape and we have great opportunities to continue building a
city we all love to call home.
My term as Mayor of Ballarat is coming to a close however I look forward
to continuing my service as a Councillor. I will always remember my time
as Mayor with great pride and fondness and I thank my family for all their
love, patience and encouragement.
I also thank my fellow Councillors for their support during this special
opportunity to serve the community and I look forward to supporting the
next Councillor fortunate enough to be elected Mayor of Ballarat.
