AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Buninyong will host the road race sections of the annual Australian National
Cycling Championships in Januar y when the event returns to Ballarat.
The road race championships take place on Saturday and Sunday, 7 and
8 Januar y 2012. The 10.2km Buninyong circuit is considered one of the toughest
rides in Australia and riders must have enduring strength, powerful hill climbing
ability and technical bike skills to tackle the downhill section.
The rural setting is described by riders as offering a Tour de France style environment.
Something not found on the Tour de France, however, is a homemade lemonade
stall, operated here by two local primary school students. Up to 15,000 spectators
pack the many viewing areas on the Sunday to witness the Men’s Road Race

to be staged in the third week of October each year.
The Buninyong Film Festival is held on the first weekend of May each
year in the Buninyong Town Hall. The Festival combines film and food,
creating a delectable feast for the senses for the passionate film-loving
crowd. Featured films in 2011 included Me and Orson Wells, Sarah’s
Key and South Solitary.
In addition to the Makers Markets, Buninyong is also home to a thriving
Farmers’ Market, held on the third Saturday of each month. The market
features fresh produce, food and wine and is sponsored by the Rotary
Club of Ballarat East.
