The Nationals Ride into
The home of Australian road cycling will once again transform into a cycling
mecca with the Mars Cycling Australia Road National Championships set
to take place in the City of Ballarat from Thursday to Tuesday, 5 to 10
The five day event will feature three major disciplines – time trial, criterium
and road race - and is contested by a world class field of Olympic and
Commonwealth Games medallists and Australia’s Tour De France stars.
Across all three championships, the event incorporates three categories of
racing: Women’s Elite, Men’s Under 23 and Men’s Elite.
One of the most prestigious events on the Australian cycling calendar, the
‘Nationals’ highlight the popularity of Ballarat as a cycling destination with
thousands of spectators expected watch the action.
The 2012 Championships kick off with the fast and furious excitement of the
criterium. Right in the CBD, locals line Sturt Street to enjoy the spectacle
of riders racing the 1.1km hotdog circuit course.
Winding through the picturesque countryside of Buninyong, spectators
enjoy a Tour de France style environment at the road races. On Saturday,
the Women’s and Under 23 Men’s champions are decided at the finish
line of a 10.2km circuit that’s filled with punishing climbs, fast winding
downhills and a challenging spring to the end. On Sunday, a crowd of
15,000 spectators will flock to watch the Men’s Road Race and to meet
the new Australian Champion.
The time trial on Tuesday 10 January is the perfect opportunity to catch
one last look at the stars of Australian cycling race a countr y course at

Enjoy Summer Sundays
Pack a blanket and a picnic and enjoy summer in Ballarat’s Botanical
Gardens at City of Ballarat’s Summer Sundays festival.
Previously known as ‘Arts in the Park’, Council’s free summer festival has a
new name and a new location in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Summer
Sundays will be held over four Sundays during January from 5 to 8pm.
The line up features an eclectic mix of performers and bands with the final
week to feature a twilight cinema experience. A range of hot and cold
beverages and desserts will also be available for purchase every week.

– Cupcakes and Macaroons
Sunday 15 January – Puta Madre Brothers and The Redans
– Banana Spilt Sundaes and Milkshakes
