Now in its 18th year, the Art Gallery of Ballarat's
Next Gen exhibition is about excellence and
innovation in contemporary art and design
practice, as seen in recent work by students who
have just completed Year 12 VCE art and design
This year, the work of 73 artists is represented,
selected from more than 300 applicants from
government, Catholic and independent schools,
most from the Ballarat and Grampians region.
Next Gen is an important part of the Gallery's
exhibition program. For the community, it is an
opportunity to gain insight into the world of young
people today by exploring their recently produced
art and design works. For the artists in the exhibition
is an excellent introduction to the arts industry, and
for students beginning VCE, it can be an informative
and inspiring introduction to their studies.
The Next Gen exhibition features diversity
in subject matter and use of materials and
techniques, which include painting and drawing,
printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, glassware,
fashion and textiles, digital photography, furniture
design and screen-based art.
As well as producing amazing artworks which
demonstrate a high level of skill, many of the
artists are making bold statements about the world
today, demonstrating their political, environmental
and social awareness. Themes include youth
issues, animal rights, history and gender issues,
and the environment.
Next Gen is on display at the Art Gallery of Ballarat
through Sunday 24 March, 2013. The Gallery is
open daily from 10am to 5pm
and entry is free.
